Communication Technologies for Smart Energy Management Systems推荐

Chapter 6 Communication Technologies for Smart Energy Management Systems The implementation of smart energy management systems will rely on the integra- tion of several technologies, including: sensing and actuating devices, smart appli- ances, some kind of controller, and the communication network. In the future, it is envisaged that a variety of sensing devices will be deployed within buildings in order to monitor the occupants and environment in which appliances are operating. Smart appliances will use the data provided by these sensing devices to adjust their operation mode, and hence manage their energy usage according to changes in the environment they are operating in. In certain situations, appliances will not be able to perform the necessary changes in isolation, and will need the intervention of actuators. As described in the previous chapter, it is clear that the implementation of smart energy management systems will therefore be predicated on the availability of home communication networks that allow devices to share monitoring information and exchanging control commands. Given the diversity of available communication technologies, this chapter will identify the communication solutions and standards that could be used in the context of smart energy management systems, describing their characteristics, assessing their qualities, and identifying their limitations. 6.1 Power Line Communication (PLC) PLC technology uses the existing power distribution infrastructure for communica- tion between nodes which gives it a cost advantage over other wired technologies. PLC [ 1, 2] can use sockets for both power and communication and could provide a pre-existing line back to the Utility, making it a good candidate for ubiquitous ap- pliance communication in buildings. Though there can be performance issues over long distances and over complex legacy power networks, a number of open and proprietary
