It is important to note that The manipulations had no effects on students’ beliefs regarding other people’s stereotypical views of their abilities. When we measured students expectations that others would judge them according to their social identity, the malleable group look no different than the control groups. What differed then is their academic reactions to the prospect of being stereotyped. As suggested by our lab studies, we think they responded with reduced anxiety and increased motivation. One of the things that is so intriguing about this research is how much one can accomplish by changing one key idea. What we wonder, is whether by changing other ideas at the same time, we might be able to compound these positive effects. If so, one can well imaging a multifaceted intervention could put a significant dent in the minority white achievement gap. * * * * * * Foster expansive notions of intelligence and growth mindset Normalize experiences of difficulty Promote awareness of stereotype threat Provide “wise criticism” in formative feedback * * * Among my key questions are: What makes the intelligence of some groups more fragile than others? And, what can be done to make people’s intelligence more resistant? There are lots of answers to these questions.
