Manzato INAF – SI Trieste Astronomical Observatory VObs.it a project inside the IVOA (International Virtual Observatory Alliance) The IVOA is an alliance to develop standard formats, services and tools for the international utilization of astronomical archives: 1st step: observational data VOTable with UCD (Unified Content Descriptors) Registry and data access protocol; Tools to visualize, analyze and compare the data; 2nd step: theoretical data Create archives and database Create access protocol Registry data Develop existing tools to enable them to operate with simulated data. The Theoretical Virtual Observatory (TVO) The main purpose of the TVO is to create a distributed database of simulated data accessible from anywhere in a easy and transparent way, and to include some services to allow the user to download data and extract information from them. Data: Data growth: extremely fast (approx. double each year) Data must be stored, organized, described Applications: Demand for computational resources for data analysis (computers, software, services) Algorithmic intensity, nonlinearity, bandwidth limits The ITVO represents the Italian effort toward the theoretical archive Archives + DBs + services Archives contain the output files of the simulation; Databases contain the metadata of the simulation that should include all the parameters to perform the running not only the physical ones; Data access: it could be performed via Web Portal or Web services or in future via Grid infrastructure also creating on demand new simulated data. Distributed archives Archives: Into the ITVO@Trieste are stored cosmological N-body+SPH simulations performed with GADGET-2.0 code (http://www.mpa-garching.mpg.de/galform/gadget/index.shtml) ; Into the ITVO@Bologna are stored cosmological N-body+AMR simulations performed with Enzo code(/enzo/) ; Into the ITVO@Catania are stored cosmological N-body simulatio
