Abstract Preparation Guide Your abstract will be a stand-alone, concise summary of the longer research report that you prepare. The abstract should be clear and brief, stating the most important aspects of the study only. It provides readers with an opportunity to learn about the content of the study and determine if it is useful or appropriate to read the longer report. Your abstract should not include content that does not appear later in the longer report (though the wording does not have to be exactly the same). For a helpful guide on preparing an abstract in health sciences, see the University of Toronto’s writing centre: http://www.hswriting.ca/handouts/abstract.asp Abstract Outline Objectives Provide one to two sentences stating the objective of your study. Background Provide a brief overview of the context and literature supporting the need for your study. Methodology Provide one to two sentences identifying the methods used to conduct the study. What type of study was it (chart review, evaluation of practice etc.) How was data collected? How many participants (e.g. charts, surveys, or interviewees) were included in the study? What tools were used? What methods were used to analyze the data? Results Provide a summary of the main findings of the study. Discussion Provide a summary of what the findings mean and how they relate to the literature (both background/context and justification for the study). Conclusions Provide one to two sentences stating the main conclusions emerging from your study. For example, you might consider answering one or two of the following questions: Did the study answer your research question? What do the findings mean or what is their significance? What do the findings mean for other practitioners/clinics/areas? Do the findings highlight the need for any change in practice? Do the findings highlight the need for further research?
