$ Theodore Dreiser Major Writing Features Stressed determinism in his novels. His characters can’t assert their will against natural and economic forces. Truthfully reflecting the society and people in his time With relentless observation, Dreiser has a vivid description of environmental settings and social background and almost all of his main characters are based on the real people. Major Writing Features Depict real-life subjects in a harsh light. Dreisers principal concern was the conflict between human needs and the demands of society for material success. Dreisers great theme was the tremendous tensions that can arise among ambition, desire, and social morals. Major Writing Features Full of tragedies, serious subjects and miserable side of the society. His novels revealed the life of the lower class people and dared to expose the vulgar and ugly side of the society. His powerful frankness widens the social and sexual range possible for literature in America Style 1. Language: very awkward, crude [unrefined] on the bordering of line of grammar. 2. Serious in tone: never satirical or comic 3. Natural narrative method, free from artifice [deception], based on quantities of materials and detailed descriptions. Achievement A great naturalist Though he has been a controversical figure in American literary history ,he showed a new way of presenting reality and inspired the writers of 1920s with courage and insights.
