Loi Krathong is a traditional festival in Thailand ,held annually in the November . “Loi” is the Thai language , means “ to float ” , and “Krathong ” means “ raft ” , traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk .The size is about ?a hand span in diameter . The significance to Thai of celebrating the Loi Krathong is to honor and pay respect to the goddess of water . It is generally believed that this festival came from the king of Thai first dynasty named Sukhothai(速古台) . He thought that it’s not the natural thing of good weather for the crops , timely wind and rain ,it’s the bless of god of water , MaeKongka . Later , a woman , whom the king trusted very much , suggested an most ancient way from Brahmanical manner(婆罗门仪式) , making a boat full of lights , and letting it float on the river to honor the god . Of coursre ,as you can see ,the king approved the manner ,and decided to make it a festival annually in December in Thai calendar . They chose a wonderful night ,and people from all of the country gathered to watch their king light the first lighted raft and put it on the river . Lighted raft are traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk , but now developed to be made of bread or sometimes made of plastic . The reason of using bread is to protect the environment, since having many rafts in the river can create a huge water pollution problem .It can also feed the fish . Generally , a raft is decorated with elaborately-folded(多层复杂折叠) banana leaves(香蕉叶), flowers, candles, incense sticks(香柱) etc . During the festival , governmental offices, corporations and other organizations usually create big decorated rafts to participate in .And there are also all scales of raft competitions . Light sky lanterns(孔明灯) is another activity of the festival .At that moment ,there are light both on water and sky ,it’s very beatiful .
