Henry (1862-1910) William Sydney Porter one of the most prolific writers in the history of American literature Life Story born on September 11, 1862, in North Carolina; father, a physician; mother died when he was three; an avid reader At the age of 15, he left school In 1882, traveled to Texas; in 1884 traveled to Austin On July 1, 1887, Porter married with Athol Estes In 1898 he entered a penitentiary at Columbus, Ohio. While in prison O. Henry started to write short stories. O. Henry moved to New York City in 1902 Died on June 5, 1910, in New York. O. Henry’s Stories O. Henrys short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization and clever twist endings. Most of O. Henrys stories are set in his own time, the early 20th century. Many take place in New York City and deal for the most part with ordinary people: clerks, policemen, waitresses, etc. 2.
