Federal holidays There are eleven such Federal holidays, ten annual and one quadrennial(每四年一次的 ) holiday. If a holiday falls on a Saturday it is celebrated the preceding Friday; if a holiday falls on a Sunday it is celebrated the following Monday . The Congress has designated various United States federal observances—days, weeks, months, and other periods for the observance, commemoration, or recognition of events, individuals, or other topics New Years Day Date:January 1 Remarks:Celebrates beginning of the Gregorian calendar year. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Date:Third Monday in January Remarks:Honors Martin Luther King, Jr., Civil Rights leader, who was actually born on January 15, 1929; combined with other holidays in several states. Inauguration Day(总统节) Date:January 20 Remarks:Celebrated the first January 20 following a Presidential election every fourth year . Washingtons Birthday Date:Third Monday in February Remarks:many people now refer to this holiday as “Presidents‘ Day” and consider it a day honoring all American presidents . Memorial Day(亡兵紀念日) Date:Last Monday in May Remarks:Honors the nations war dead from the Civil War onwards. Independence Day Date:July 4 Remarks: Celebrates Declaration of Independence,also called the Fourth of July. Labor Day Date:First Monday in September Remarks:Celebrates the achievements of workers and the labor movement . Columbus Day(哥伦布日) Date:Second Monday in October Remarks:Honors Christopher Columbus, traditional discoverer of the Americas. Veterans Day(退伍军人节 ) Date:November 11 Remarks:Honors all veterans of the United States armed forces. Thanksgiving Day Date:Fourth Thursday in November Remarks:Traditionally celebrates the giving of thanks for the autumn harvest. Traditionally includes the consumption of a turkey dinner.
