AbstractComparedwithtextureimage,depthmapcanbesavedcodingrateandeasily renderedvirtualviewpointbyDepthImageBasedRendering,textureplusdepthof multi-viewvideoisconsideredtobethemosteffective3Dvideorepresentation,depth informationisindispensableimportantinformationfor3Dvideodataexpression. Compared with general textureimage, the depthmap is object interior smoothingand edge outstandingcharacteristic,andisntusedtotheoutputdisplayandlooked,onlytodraw newviewpoint.Duetothedifferencesbetweenthegeneral2Dvideoanddepthvideo,itis notrationaltodirectlyadoptthetraditionalvideowayfordepthprocessing,sowe proposenewoptimizationmodelofdepthmapandefficientcodingmethodmakingfull use of characteristics ofdepth map.Firstofall,weproposeaneffectiveoptimizationmodelofdepthmap,whichnot onlyremovesnoisebutalsomaintainclearobjectboundaries,andatthesametime, consideringthefourmeasuresagainsttheirneighborpixelsincoloranddepthimage,the values ofpixel position hole regions can be recovered.Secondly,weproposeEdge-directedinterpolationfordown/up-baseddepthmap. Preservationtheedgesindepthmapcodingisimportantforimprovingsynthesizedview quality,thispaperpresentsanoveledge-preservingdepthup-samplingmethodfor down/upsampling-baseddepthcodingusingboththetextureanddepthinformation.The depthup-sampling algorithmtookintoaccounttheedgesimilaritybetweendepthmapand correspondingtextureimage,andstructuralsimilaritybetweenlowresolutiondepthmap andhighresolutiondepthmap.Basedonthesecharacters,theoptimalminimummean squarederror(MMSE)interpolationcoefficientswereestimatedfromthelocalcovariance coefficients of down-sampled depth map and correspondingtextureimage.Andlastly,weproposedepthmapcoding basedonvisualperception.Asthe performanceofdepthmapcodingmainlydependsonthesubjectiveandobjectivequality ofrenderingview,inthedepthmapcoding,notonlyshouldweconsiderreducing renderingdistortionofthevirtualview,butwe shouldkeepconsistencebetweendistortion measureandsubjectiveopinions.Webuildanestimationmodelofrenderingdistort
