The 5 micron INK FILTER ensure that any debris which enters through changing valves, or filters, does not enter the printhead. The nozzle is the most critical component in the system, and an expensive item to replace, therefore the addition of a filter at this stage is helpful. The next problem we have is when the jet is forming: Air that is trapped in the nozzle while the jet is forming, interferes with its formation. By adding a BLEED VALVE (V12), the air may be purged quickly as the pressure is switched on to the head. The sequence is: Ink feed valve (V6) opens Wait 4 seconds Bleed valve (V12) opens Wait 12 seconds Close bleed valve (V12) This ensures the rapid escape of air, and leads to a stable jet. Even with the filters present in the system, if it is shut down incorrectly, ink may dry in the nozzle, leading to bad starts, and a partially blocked nozzle. By the addition of a GUTTER VALVE (V8), it is possible to use the suction that is generated by the Venturi, and to apply it to the nozzle. By irrigating the nozzle with a cleaning solution, the debris is sucked back into the system, and returned to the reservoir. This allows the nozzle to be cleaned without needing to dismantle the printhead. Although the reservoir contains ink, held at the correct viscosity, it will gradually run out, as we use it for printing. In order to replenish the ink to the tank, we use a top-up reservoir, which hold up to 1 litre of ink, and is added to the tank as the level goes down. The INK TOPUP VALVE (V2) is used to supply ink to the low pressure side of the pump, which sucks it, through the Venturi, into the ink tank. As the ink is circulated in the printhead, the solvent content of the ink is evaporated. This leads the ink getting thicker (higher viscosity). We need to control this, and ensure the ink is always maintained at the correct viscosity.
