Romanticism The romantic period began in 1798 the publication of Wordsworth and Coleridge’s Lyrical Ballads, and end in 1832 with Sir Walter Scott’s death. Romanticism:It emphasize the specialqualitie of each individual’s mind.(人应该是独立自由的个体) In it, emotion over reason, spontaneous emotion, a change from the outer world of social civilization to the inner world of the human spirit, poetry should be free from all rules, imagination, nature, commonplace. Romanticism movement arose at a time when there was considerable social and political upheaval in England, Europe and American and when the rights of individuals were beginning to be asserted. It was also a time when poets were becoming less reliant on patrons and therefore had greater freedom to express themselves. Romanticism movement artistic and intellectual movement revolted against the Neoclassicism of the previous centuries. It lasted from the late 18th to the mid-19th century and stressed strong emotion, imagination, freedom from classical correctness in art forms, and rebellion against social conventions The basic aims of romanticism * a return to nature and to belief in the goodness of humanity; * the rediscovery of the artist as a supremely individual creator; * the development of nationalistic pride; * the elevation of senses and emotions over reason and intellect. The English Romantic Movement Background: At the end of 18th century a new literature arose in England--Romanticism. It opposed most of the ideas held earlier in the century. It had its roots in a changed attitude toward human. The forerunners of Romanticists argued that humans are naturally good; society makes them bad. If the social world could be changed, all men might be happier. They suggested many reforms: better treatment of people in prisons, fewer death penalties for minor crimes, increase in charitable institutions.
