* Economic Globalization and Transformation of Urban Systems in the Yangtze Delta Region In the process of economic globalization, development of the Yangtze Delta Region (YDR) has become increasingly linked with the global economy, leading to new trends in the transformation of urban systems. This presentation therefore contains two main parts, economic globalization and the transformation of urban systems in the YDR. Economic Globalization in the Yangtze Delta Region The spatial and temporal dimensions of economic globalization in the YDR are examined using the global circulation of capital, product, people and information as indicators. Spatial dimension: 15 cities in the YDR Temporal dimension: 1996-2005 1.1 Measurement of Economic Globalization Based on Castells’ conception of ‘space of flows’ and taking into consideration data availability, the index of economic globalization (IEG) contains four measures, namely FDI (FDI/GDP), foreign trade (total value of import and export/GDP), overseas visitors (number of overseas visitors/local population) and internet coverage (number of internet users/local households), respectively indicating the global circulation of capital, product, people and information. Weights of 0.4, 0.4, 0.1, 0.1 are allocated to the above-mentioned four indicators respectively, regarding FDI and foreign trade as the core measures of economic globalization. During 1996-2005, change in the IEG in the region can be divided into three phases. The period of 1996-1999 witnessed a steady fall of the region’s IEG when the Asian financial crisis hit the regional and global economy. With China’s membership in WHO bringing about positive effects on inward investment and foreign trade, the region’s IEG rose rapidly during 2000-2003. When the WHO effect began getting weaker, the rise of the region’s IEG became marginal. 1.2 Spatial and Temporal Dimensions of Economic Globalization The spatial dimension of economic globalization in the region
