Philip Freneau Comments III Freneau points out differences between Christian and Indian in burying customs in order to set the stage for his vivid images of the Indians’ spirits actively pursuing their old customs in the environs of their graveyard. This poem has always been regarded as the first eulogistic poem about Indian custom and their bravery. Freneau Philip Freneau To a Caty-Did 蝈蝈儿 The lyric poem is composed of eight stanzas of septet, except the last stanza. Each line is composed of seven syllables basically. The metrical foot of tri-meter is the combination of anapest, firstly, and then, iambic. The rhyming form is set as an irregular arrangement of aabbcca, aabbccd, aabbbcc, aabbccdd, aabbccb, aaabcbb, aabbbbc, aaabbbcdddc. “Caty-did”, the sound of the insect, echoing twenty times in the poem, leaves the readers the natural world full of vigor, with the mostly consonant “d” rhyme. The last lines “And to go, we know not where, / With your song of Caty-did.”, together with the concealment of the name of the famous insect, shows that the nature is mystic, for it embodies the spirit of God. Philip Freneau Literary Terms Lyric Poem A lyric poem is a poem of limited length expressing the thoughts and feelings of a single speaker. The lyric has a regular metrical pattern and a regular rhyme scheme. It is characterized by its intensely personal tone and imagery. There are a number of more specific categories of lyrics: (1)The elegythis is a dignified lyric poem, lamenting the death of an individual “among all men.” (2)The odethis is a lyric poem of considerable length, the ode is serious in subject and formal in style. (3)The sonnetlyric poem of 14 lines which follow a designated rhyme scheme. The sonnet is written in iambic pentameter.
