We were not the first to patient the scroll. It’s first patient was in 1905, used in a steam engine. The scroll is named for the shape of the two elements that fit with close tolerances. The scroll element on the left is the orbiting member and the element on the right is the fixed member. Many of our competitors manufacturing scrolls have not been as successful due to our machining ability. Our machining is capable of achieving the close clearance/tolerances needed for the elements to ride together with minimal leakage or re-expansion. The two elements fit with the scrolls meshing together. The lower scroll will orbit due to the action of the oldham coupling on the left. This throws the scroll into an orbiting motion that allows for gas to be compressed as it moves into smaller pockets towards the center of the elements. The scroll set is placed in the upper part of the shell. Note that gas enters the suction tube, cools the motor, and is pulled into the opening of the scroll sets and compresses towards the center.
