AbstractWiththegradualimprovementanddevelopmentoftelevisionarts,anincreasing numberofTVseriesarecreatedandshown,amongwhichtherearemanypoliticaldramaswhoseuniquepeculiarityhascausedtheaudiences’widespreadattentionand pursuit,andinwhichthepragmaticvaguenessfrequentlyappearsinactorsoractress’ lines withdeepimplication.Vaguelanguageisacommonlinguisticphenomenon, whichhasbeenwidelyusedinthedailycommunication,anditaccountsforalargeproportioninEnglish.VaguelanguageenablepeopletoimproveEnglish communicationskills,andenhancetheflexibilityoflanguageexpression.ItishelpfulforEnglishlearnerstomastertheskillsofvaguelanguageandrelatedknowledgein ordertoimprovetheircommunicativecompetenceinEnglish.Inviewofsuchcondition,thisthesisattemptstoconductananalysisofthepragmaticvaguenesswithinthepopularAmericanTVplayHouseofcards.Itgivesabriefintroductionofcorrespondinginstanceswithrespecttotheapplicationofabasicpragmatictheory,namelythecooperativeprinciple.Withquiteafewqualitativeanalysis,itisnotdifficulttofindthatthevagueeffectscouldberealizedbylexismeans andviolatingthefourmaximsinassociationwithcooperativeprinciple.Thecooperativeprinciplereferstoaguidelinecategorywhichneedstobejointly cooperatedand followedcollectivelyby theparticipantsinadialoguein order to achievethecommonpurposeofsmoothcommunication.However,inHouseofCards, thedialoguesachievepragmaticvaguenessbyviolatingfourmaximsofcooperativeprinciple,namelyquantity,quality,relationandmanner,whichmakethisdramaeven moredistinctive.Withthemethodofqualitativeanalysisandtheclassifieddataofverbalvagueness chosenfromthedialoguesbetweenFrancisandClaire,thecoupleofUnderwoodwithin SeasonOneofHouseofCards,thisthesisaimsatexploringthepragmaticfactorsthatproducevagueness,soastodeveloppragmaticcompetence,boosttheEnglishlearners’ enthusiasm,helpteachersrefinetheirEnglishteachingmethodsandenhancetheefficiencyofcross-culturalcommunication.Keywords:TVplayseries;HouseofCards;pragmaticvagueness;cooperativeprinciplei摘要随着电视艺术的逐步改进和发展，越来越多的电视剧集得以制作与播放，其中，
