Abstract Examination plays a very important role in a school’s daily work. Applying computer and network technology in the test field, in particular, after the emergence of Web technology makes test without time and space constraints, and the examination results are more accurate and objective. At present, online examination systems are developed by specialized companies and test are based on standardized examinations. Thus there exist such proble. ms as slowness in the generating of test paper, low successful rate in generating test paper, high cost in system software and examination, and single test questions and so on, which is difficult to meet the needs of the school examinations. Considering the shortcomings of online examination and the actual situation of the school, we designed and implemented an online examination system based on the mode of B/S. In this paper, firstly we study the key theoretical technology used in developing software system, which laid a good foundation for the future design and implementation of the system. Secondly, we study the traditional examination process to make clear the examination process and do demand analysis, then put forward an online exam systems function including personal management, system management, permissions settings, online examination, results enquiry, test management, paper management, marking papers, online exchanges and so on. I also point out the target of design. According to the characteristics of examination system, we determined to use B/S three-layer model as this system structure. Aiming at the time-consuming and low efficiency problem of test paper generating, we designed an improved niche genetic algorithm through the analysis and applied it to test system to solve the test paper generating problem Finally, we explained the key technology and difficulties in the implementing process of the function of system in detail.
