Unit 1 Keeping Time
I. 教学目标 Objectives
Students will be able to:
understand the main idea and structure of the text.
learn and practice the reading skills: 1.predicting 2. developing reading fluency.
grasp the key language points and grammatical structures in the text.
conduct a series of reading, listening, speaking and writing activities.
II. 课时安排 Time Allotment
The suggested division goes like this:
1st and 2nd periods: Chapter One
3rd and 4th periods: Chapter Two
5th and6th periods: Supplementary reading materials and vocabulary exercises
7th and 8th periods: Revision exercises, check on students’ homework

Getting Ready
Warm-up questions:
Do you regard time as your friend or enemy?
Are you satisfied with your time management in the university? If yes, why? If no, why not? How can you improve your time management skills?
Chapter 1
Pre- reading tasks
1. Do exercise A.B (before you read) on P. 2, then discuss. Ss give their own opinions.
2. Lead- in
Time is a part of the measuring system used to sequence events, to compare the durations of events and the intervals between them, and to quantify rates of change such as the motions of objects.[1] Time has been a major subject of religion, philosophy, and science, but defining it in a non-controversial manner applicable to all fields of study has consistently eluded the greatest scholars. We will read the article to find more about people’s efforts in knowing and keep track of time.
Scanning
Introduce the reading skill: predicting, and draw students’ attention to the information in the skill box:Predicting
Students scan the reading to decide if the statements in before you read are T or F.
Detailed reading
Ask the students to read the passage again and underline the new words and the parts which they don’t understand.
Do the exercise on P.4 and exercises A.B ( Vocabulary Comprehension Words in Contest) on P.5, then check.
