AbstractNoun+NouncompoundsareimportantlinguisticformsinChinese.ChineseN+Ncompoundsaccountforthelargestfamilyandhavearousedincreasingattentionoflinguists.AN+Ncompoundreferstoacompoundnounwhichiscomprisedoftwoormorenouns.Inthisthesis,theauthoronlyexaminestheN+Ncompoundswhicharecomposedofxinandanarbitrarynoun,withthepatternofN-N→N,onetypeisxin+N,theotherisN+xin.BasedonthefactthatChineseN+Ncompoundsplayavitalpartintheprocessofmeaningcompounding,thisthesistakes―xin‖asanexample.N+NcompoundsareextractedbyvirtueofonlinecorpusdevelopedbytheStateLanguageCommission.102targetChineseN+NcompoundsaboutheartareobtainedbyusingthestandardofMetaphorIdentificationProcedure(MIP)ofThePragglejaz.Theyareclassifiedintotwocategories:endocentricN+NcompoundsandexocentricN+Ncompounds.Langackerpointsoutthatschema-instancerelationexistsbetweenthesemanticunitsoflanguagestructuresinhisCognitiveGrammar.Semanticunitscanbecombinedintoacompositestructurethroughvalencerelation.Inmostcases,thesemanticsofcompositestructuresinherittheprofiledeterminantofcompositestructure.Thetargetdataareanalyzedbasedonthecombinationofprofiledeterminant,conceptualmetaphor,conceptualmetonymyandinteractionbetweenmetonymyandmetaphor.Conclusionsaredrawnasfollows:Firstly,inChineseN+Ncompoundsbasedonxin,endocentricN+Ncompoundsaccountfor95.1%whileexocentricN+Ncompoundsaccountfor4.9%;Secondly,accordingtothewayinwhichmetaphorandmetonymyactuponmodifierandprofiledeterminant,therearetwotypesofmetaphoricalpatterns:onlymetaphorisinvolvedandmetaphorbased-onmetonymy.Finally,whenheartactsasmodifierinendocentricN+Ncompounds,themainmetaphoricalpatternsofN+Ncompoundsare:“HEARTISCONCRETEOBJECTORENTITY,‖,―HEARTISEMOTION‖and―HEARTISMENTALITY‖;iwhenheartfunctionsasprofiledeterminant,themainmetaphoricalpatternsofN+Ncompoundsare:“HEARTISTHECENTRAOFOBJECT‖,―HEARTISTHEMOSTIMPORTANTPART‖,―HEARTISEMOTION‖,and―HEARTISMENTALITY‖;inexocentricN+NCompounds,themainmetaphoricalpatternsofN+Ncompoundsare―HEARTISEMOTION‖and―HEARTISMENTALITY‖.Thefindingsofthisstu
