* Homeless, U.S.A Background 1. War on Poverty: It is the campaign of legislation and social services, aimed at reducing or eliminating poverty in the United States, begun under President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. Johnson, 36th president. Succeeding to presidency after Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. President Lyndon Johnson(1908-1973) met with prominent black leaders on Jan. 18, 1964, to discuss his war on poverty, an initiative in which the U.S. government introduced several new anti-poverty programs. A number of U.S. government agencies use poverty statistics to decide how much to spend on welfare program and transfers of money, goods, and services to help the poor. 2. Who is homeless? Members of intact families comprise an estimated 25% of all people who are homeless. Single women comprise 30%, single men 40%. 20% of homeless people are seniors, while 10% are under 18. A disproportionate number of homeless people are people of color.
