Outside view The British Library Public Libraries Reference Rooms Outside view 1 Work in pairs. Look at the photos and discuss the questions. Example answers 1 What’s the man doing in Photo 1, and where is he? He’s reading; he might be on a train but he could be in an office or a hotel. Outside view 2 Where are you likely to find the place in Photo 2? In a public library: It looks like an entrance or a ceiling in the style of the 19th or early 20th century. Outside view 3 What are the people doing in Photos 3 and 4, and where are they? Photo 3 looks like someone eating in a café; he’s looking out of the window – the place could be London, anyway a big city, I think. Photo 4 has lots of computers, but it is in a library because you can see the books on shelves. Outside view 4 What’s special about the place in Photo 5? It’s a new building and it’s the British Library, so it must be the new building of the British Library. 5 What do you think the video clip is about? Although not all the photos seem to be about libraries (Photo 3), most of them seem to be about libraries – the two photos with British Library signs must be clues that the video clip is about the British Library. Outside view 3 Watch Part 1 again and check your answers to Activity 2. Now work in pairs and discuss which information is also true for China. e.g. We think a smaller percentage of people read for pleasure in China, but the number is increasing rapidly. You can borrow books free from city and provincial libraries, including children’s libraries, but this possibility varies from city to city. Probably more people buy books rather than borrow them from libraries, partly because there are more bookshops than public libraries and perhaps because reading for pleasure is still developing among the general population.
