Singleness Is Not the Same as Not Settled ;CONTENTS;Introduction;Questions and Answers;Intensive Reading;Para. 1011; Likewise, Conservative groups have brought to congress their concerns over societys changing composition, calling it a troubling indicator of deeper problems. But researchers contradict this theory, saying that what the trend truly reveals is that adults just prefer their own company, living near their families, but not with them. In fact, its very American.
Americans are individualists, and unless were married and raising children, we tend to want to live alone, rather than impose upon relatives, says Professor Andrew Cherlin, of Johns Hopkins University.
Cherlin says some people are worried that it makes for a more distant society, but most people who live alone do so near friends and family. Americans want intimacy at a distance. ; Researchers, however, point out that the single trend will have a significant effect on American institutions. With fewer households having children, for example, public schools will face a more difficult time gathering support for building and educational programs.
Though several studies show that married people tend to live healthier and happier lives, Kris Osborn doesnt want to marry immediately. He confesses, I have to travel a lot with my work, and I really love it. Right now, my calendar is pretty full, and I know this is not really compatible with a serious relationship.
Does he mind still being single?
No, I like it, he says without hesitation. Im not ruling out marriage. But the conversion from bachelor to husband is not one Im in a rush to make. ;学生们正在认真学习。
