AbstractAsakindofsmartmaterial,theIPMChasmanymeritssuchaslowpowerrequirement,simpleactuatingmodeandlight-weight,whichpromiseitsprospectinfieldsofbio-inspiredrobotics,artificialmuscles,andbiologicalmedicineetc.InordertosatisfythewiderequirementsofscientificresearchandengineeringpracticeofIPMCmaterials,thepreparationandoptimizationofIPMC,andthecouplingelectricandmechanicpropertiesofIPMCarestudied.Themainworksareshownasfollows:TheresearchstatusofIPMCtechnologyanddevelopmenttrendarereviewedandanalyzedsystematically.ThefeatureofIPMCelectricactuatoranditsapplicationinengineeringaredescribedindetail.ThephysicochemicalconstitutiveofIPMCmaterialsanditselectronicactuatorareinterpreted.ThestandardprocessofpreparationforIPMCbasedonNafion-117membraneisstudied.ThetestpieceofIPMCelectronicactuatorispreparedbyreducingPtonthesurfaceofNafion-117membranewithelectrolessplating.Theresultsshowthatthecompactlyembeddedmicro-structureofIPMCactuatorisframedbetweenthePtelectrodeandNafion-117membrane,andthiskindofIPMCactuatorcanrespondtoelectricstimulusbylargebending.FocusingonthedefectsoflowpoweroutputofIPMCactuator,theprocessofpreparationforIPMCbasedonGel-castingisstudiedtoenhancetheoutputpowerofIPMC.ThethicknessofIPMCpreparedbythisprocesscanreach0.8mm,anditseffectiveoutputforcecouldreach27mN,whichisalmostthreetimesasmuchastheIPMCactuatormadefromNafion-117membrane.AneasierprocessofdirectionalcoarseningforIPMCmembraneisstudied,whichimprovetheoutputforceby7%comparedwiththeonepreparedbytraditionalnon-directionalcoarsening.Atestingplatformbasedonthevisualnon-contactmeasuringprincipleisbuilt.Withlotsofelectric-mechanicaltestontheplatform,severaldisciplinesonresponseproperty,strainproperty,mechanicspropertyandelectro-mechanicalcouplingpropertyofIPMCarerevealedandsummarized.TheresponddisplacementofIPMCwithinputsofvariouswaveformsisstudied.Amongthetestofsquarewave,thesineandthetriangularone,thesquarewaveshowsthebesteffectonthetip-displacementofIPMC.ComparedwithtraditionalIPMCmaterialsusingwaterasthe
