As Freud declares, complex is an instinctive impulse hidden in an individual’s unconsciousness. It can be stimulated under certain circumstances or situation. This dissertation is a study of Katherine Mansfield’s Peter Pan complex: the formation and reflection of Peter Pan complex in her personal life and its implication in her short stories. A specific and systematic research will provide a helpful perspective to understand Katherine Mansfield, her stories and their interconnections.Introduction to Katherine MansfieldIntroduction to Katherine Mansfield’s Literary LifeBorn on October 14, 1888, in Wellington, New Zealand, Katherine Mansfield was the third daughter in a family of four girls and one boy. Her father was a powerful figure in Wellington, a self-made man and eventually became the director of the Bank of New Zealand. Katherine and her two elder sisters were sent to London in 1903 to attend Queen’s College, an advanced institution for the education of young women. Three years later, they finished their education and returned, but Katherine was determined to escape from the restriction of family, colonial life, and bourgeoisie social conventions. She came back to London in 1908 with a small allowance of 100 pounds per year from her father to attempt to establish herself as a writer. The act presaged a restlessness that persisted throughout her life. Her most significant girl friend, Ida Baker, treated by Mansfield as her wife, remained with her throughout her life.
