How to Write a 5 Paragraph Expository Essay By: Amy Pratt 4th Grade Language Arts Anna, TX Different Kinds of Writing We write for fun. We write letters, jokes, stories, and to share information with our friends and family. Most school writing fits into a different category called Expository writing. Expository Writing The purpose of expository writing is to communicate ideas or to answer questions. Expository Writing: Gives information about a topic Explains ideas Gives directions Shows how to do something So your teacher gives you a prompt and tells your to write an essay. “Write a composition about your favorite pet.” WHAT DO YOU DO? DON’T PANIC!!! Similar to writing a paragraph… It’s EASY!!! Start with your main idea or topic. (Use key words from the prompt) You ONLY need THREE ideas… 3 reasons to show that your topic sentence in true and 3 examples for each of your reasons (Remember to “show” not tell) That’s ALL you need for the start of a great essay! Use Correct Paragraph Format Each paragraph must include: Topic Sentence 3 Examples Conclusion NO paragraph should be less than 5 sentences. The Introduction Start with a topic sentence that uses KEY WORDS from the prompt. Then write 3 reasons that prove why topic sentence is true. My favorite pet is my dog, Spike. He is absolutely adorable and very easy to care for. Playing with him is fun and always an adventure. He is one of my best friends because I can tell him anything and I know he won’t tell anyone my secrets. Now end with a CONCLUSION Remember that each paragraph must have a concluding sentence.
