stereotypes International Politics Echo Defination Stereotypes are set of widely shared GENERALIZATIONS about a group or class of people. Stereotypes are TENDENCIES, sometimes they can tend into DISCRIMINATIONS if we misinterpret a stereotype and act upon it in a negitive manner. Forms Examples Gender stereotype Girls play with doll, and boys play robot. Such sayings called gender stereotypes. And these kind of impressions may cause gender discriminations in some fields. Area/Ethnic stereotype For example, Japanese all eat raw fish. People who live in Brooklyn are poor. All Muslims are terrorists. All Chinese people are good at Maths. Appearance stereotypes Take cartoon charactor as a example, often having a mouth that sticks out and chin like an apes is usually the image of the bad guy. Forms Examples Preference stereotypes Otakus(indoorsmen) are slovenly, social disjointed, and not good at communication. This is a stereotype about ones interests. in fact, people share different dispositions even they have common interests. Its wrong to regard them as one. Effects make judgement easier simplify the cognitive process consciousness mistakes bring prejudice and discriminations brain torpor cause self-fulfilling prophecies (we observe others in selective ways that confirm our prejudice) have a false sense of understanding our communication partners. Tips Provide persuasive proof Bring stereotypes out of that pessimistic state Treat the first impressions correctly Improve self cultivation
