AbstractWhile the city regionalization and region urbanization has become increasingly evident, the urban spatial relationships have been evolving from the type of simple a town’s internal spatial and its surrounding space to the type of urban agglomeration spatial relationship, more and more scholars pay their attention on the research about urban group which is regarded as a new topic of urban space research field. In recent years, some empirical researchs of Chinese urban agglomerations such as Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, and Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan urban groups have rose and matured, and bring more and more regional urban agglomeration into public vision. As a particular type, urban agglomeration along river shows its unique characteristics while it also shares the common attributes on respects of stage of development characteristics, spatial growth mechanism, structure and spatial organization model, optimization strategy with general urban agglomeration type. Considered this reason, the theoretical and empirical research aims at this type presents its own special significance and value.In this research, we analyze the town group of Ezhou-Huangshi-Huanggang，easternHubei Province, as the empirical case study of urban groups, adopting the methods of empirical research, summarizing and quantitative and qualitative research methods combination , focusing on the following objectives:stage characteristics of urban groups along the eastern Hubei ;the growth mechanism of the urban group space along the eastern Hubei;the spatial pattern of the urban group along the eastern Hubei ;space coordination and optimization strategy of the urban group along the eastern Hubei .Firstly, this paper interprets stage characteristics of the town group along the river from the six aspects: development balance of the north and south of the Yangzi River, the aggregation and dispersion degree of the towns, economic and industrial development , the urban-harbour integration de
