Optical lass belon s to the typical brittle material. With hi h hardness and hi h brittleness, optical lass has poor machinability in diamond cuttin . In this work, scratchin tests with increas- in depths of cut were conducted on lass SF6 under different cuttin conditions, i. e. dry cuttin and wet cuttin in which Na CO 2 3 solutions of different concentrations were selected as cuttin fluids. The resultin scratches were examined utilizin a white li ht in- terferometer and the values of the critical depth of cut were determined based on the observations of the confocal microscopy of the scratch surfaces produced. The effect of the cuttin fluid properties on the critical depth of cut was investi ated. Experimental re- sults indicated that compared with the process without cuttin fluid action, the critical depth of cut in diamond cuttin of lass SF6 can be increased by usin Na CO solution as the cuttin fluid. 2 3 Keywords: diamond cuttin ; optical lass; critical depth of cut; cuttin fluid
