Phraseology has long been a central research focus in linguistics. It has had its roots in the former Soviet Union and other East European countries since the 1940s. It has been a developing field in West Europe and the USA since the 1970s.The Russian traditionThe Russian phraseological theory developed from the late 1940s to the 1960s. Its principal legacy is a framework of descriptive categories that is comprehensive, systematic, and soundly based (Cowie, 1998: 4).
