AbstractBianchengisthemasterpieceoftherenownedChinesewriterShenCongwen.Richinacademicandresearchvalues,itisamongthegreatestworksinChineseliteraryhistory.Ithasbeennearly80yearssinceitsfirstpublicationin1934,anditsreceptionandthestudyonithavealsogonethroughnearly80years.Bianchenghasbeentranslatedintoseverallanguages,andhasapositiveinfluenceontheWesternsociety.Uptonow,therearethreeEnglishversionsofBiancheng.Thefirstversion,entitledTheFrontierCityandpublishedin1947,istranslatedbyChingTiandRobertPayne;thesecondone,entitledTheBorderTownandpublishedin1981,isrenderedbyGladysYang;thethirdone,alsoentitledTheBorderTownandpublishedin2009,istranslatedbyJeffreyC.Kinkley.TheseEnglishversionsplayagreatroleinspreadingtheclassicalwork,andshowitsimmortalcharmtodifferentreadersofdifferenttimesfromdifferentperspectives.Onthebasisoftheabovefacts,theauthor?sintenseenthusiasmfortheEnglishtranslationofBianchengisaroused.Inthisthesis,theauthorintendstoconductacomparativestudyonthethreeEnglishversionsofthisliteraryclassicfromtheperspectiveofreceptionaesthetics.Asanewparadigmandinfluentialmethodologyoftheliterarytheoriesinthe20thcentury,receptionaestheticsshiftsthefocusofliterarycriticismfromtheworkandtheauthortothetext-readerrelationship.Thereceptionaestheticstheorists,withHansRobertJaussandWolfgangIserastheirrepresentatives,emphasizethereaders?activeroleinthereceptionprocessoftheliterarytext.Theyholdthatthecriterionforjudgingthevalueandqualityofaliteraryworkshouldbethereaders?reaction.Forthisreason,theauthorshouldfullyconsiderthereaders?culturalbackground,lifeexperiences,receptioncapabilityandreadingexperience,whichformthereaders?“horizonofexpectations”.Apartfromthis,aliterarytextembracesalotofmeaningblanksandspotsofindeterminacy.Bridgingtheauthor?screativeconsciousnessandthereaders?receptionconsciousness,theseblanksandindeterminaciescallforthereaderstoexpoundandinterprettheoriginalworkaccordingtotheirownunderstandings.Likewise,inthetranslationprocess,thetranslatorbearsadualrole:bothastherea
