初二英语阅读电子讲义(下) UNIT 5 People in the know (人物故事) Girls Guides Read the text about girl guides. What three things do they do? Underline the sentences. In Britain there are many groups for young people. The biggest one is the Girl Guides. There is also a smaller group for boys, the Boy Scouts. The Boy Scouts began in 1908 and the Girl Guides began in 1910. In 1914, they started the Brownie Guides for girls of 7-11. Today there are about 7.5 million Guides in 98 countries. There are about 1 million in Britain. Girl Guides do three main things: 1. Helping other people Every girl must do one good act every day. For example, they look after old people. They do the shopping for them, paint their rooms, grow plants and look after their animals. 2. Learning to do things Girl guides learn to look after animals, fish and birds. They learn to dance, go boating, fish, draw pictures, cook, grow plants and take photos. 3. Helping in the home Guides learn to cook, clean, make clothes and small things out of wood.
