Yue Fei was a junior officer who arose from the ranks of recruits to become the most outstanding general of the entire Song period. He died in confinement in 1141 on a charge of insubordination framed by Prime Minister Qin Hui. Circumstances further suggest that Qin engineered his murder in the death cell. At that time Qin was working closely with Emperor Zhao Gou to reach a peace settlement with the invading Jürched, who had built up a Sinicized state called the Jin (this is a different Chinese character from that of the Jin dynasty mentioned in Chapter 7) and pushed the Song south. Yue
