COUNTRYSIDE COUNCIL FOR WALES PUBLICATION SCHEME INTRODUCTION This is the Publication Scheme for the Countryside Council for Wales, drawn up under Section 19 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. The Countryside Council for Wales, an Assembly Sponsored Public Body, has the responsibility to help care for the natural environment - sustaining natural beauty, wildlife and the opportunity for outdoor enjoyment throughout Wales and its inshore waters. POWERS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE COUNTRYSIDE COUNCIL FOR WALES CCW advises the National Assembly for Wales on wildlife and landscape conservation and on encouraging better access to our countryside and coast. We have a large number of statutory duties and responsibilities to fulfil under various Acts of Parliament. These include establishing and managing for the nation, National Nature Reserves, notifying and protecting Sites of Special Scientific Interest, mapping areas of Open Access, fulfilling government responsibilities under international legislation, such as the EC Habitats Directive, developing policy work to advise ourselves and others and carrying out underpinning research. We have powers to give grants for a variety of purposes and duties in relation to National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and National Trails. We work closely with similar Government advisers in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Together, we work through an organisation called the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) to make sure that, collectively, we are able to advise the UK Government on wildlife conservation matters UK-wide and internationally. The overall aim of CCW’s work is to help the process of sustainable development in Wales, ensuring that developments benefit the economy, environment and people of Wales.
