Academic writing by numbers (or how to get published without really trying) By Johannes Cronjé University of Pretoria jcronje@up.ac.za Abstract This workshop is intended to guide you through the process of preparing the report on some research. It will guide you from the initial proposal stage, through to designing research instruments to writing up the final product as an article, dissertation or a thesis. In the process we will touch on common errors of logic and style. This is not a research methodology workshop, or a grammar course, although certain methodological and grammatical aspects will be covered in the process. It is hoped that, by the end of the course, you will have at least a very good draft article to send for peer scrutiny. The course will follow the traditional stages in the research and writing process. Introduction An introduction leads the reader into the piece of writing. It is often confused with background. This introduction will tell readers that the workshop will follow the research cycle as an organizing principle. The research cycle begins with a research proposal, continues through conducting a literature survey, designing and producing research instruments and concludes with the research report. The cycle is completed with the suggestions for further research that conclude the report. The following section will deal with the research proposal. Part One: The research proposal The research proposal focuses your ideas. It forms the contract between you and your supervisor, sponsor and research associates. In a modified format the proposal later becomes Chapter One. Getting started A good way of starting a research proposal is to write a onestatement of intent, in which you answer the following questions: What do I want to know? Why do I want to know this?
