ABSTRACT This study describes dissociation level and correlates in a clinical sample of traumatized and psychosocially exposed children with and without posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Among 125 eligible children between 6-18 years at a child psychiatric clinic for traumatized and psychosocially exposed children, 123 (98.4%) completed interviews using Child Dissociative Checklist (CDC) with children up to 10 years of age, and Adolescent Dissociative Experience Scale (A-DES) with 11 year ages and above. Thirty-three children (26.8 %) fulfilled the criteria of PTSD. Despite traumatization and psychosocially exposed circumstances, normal dissociation levels was predominant both in children with and without PTSD, except in three cases where pathological dissociation qualifying for a dissociative disorder were identified; one with and two without PTSD. No significant differences were found in dissociation scores between children with and without PTSD. Dissociation neither significantly correlated with PTSD diagnoses nor with any of the PTSD symptom cluster scores. Normal levels of dissociation seem not to interfere with PTSD criteria, while high dissociation scores might be a function of ongoing traumatization, such as sexual abuse and waiting hopeless for asy
