FRACTAL TREE INSTRUCTIONS Using GSP 4.07 Open an new screen in Geometer’s SketchPad Go to Edit/Preferences and on the Units tab select Degrees, on the Text tab and check each box. Use the Segment tool to make a vertical segment and label it AB (with A at the bottom). Select AB and in the Measure menu, select Length. Select point B and use the Transform menu to mark B as the Center. (Select Mark Center) Select the point A, go to the Transform menu and select Dilate. In the dialog box, keep the ratio as ?. Select Dilate. Label the new point (A’ is automatic) Mark B as center again (see step 4) Select point A’ and from the Transform Menu select Rotate and in the dialog box type 120 degrees. Select rotate. Select point A’ again and repeat step 10 but enter -120 for the rotation. Now to make the “fractal” by selecting the points A and B then go to the Transform Menu and select Iterate. In the dialog box, map Pre-image point A to First Image point B and Pre-image Point B to First Image point A” on the left branch. Select Structure in the dialog box and select Add New Map, then now map A to B and B to A” on the other branch. Select Iterate in the dialog box and the first 4 stages will appear (stage 0 to stage 3). To Increase/decrease the number of iterations, From the edit menu, select all (the figure will be highlighted) the use the “+” key to increase and the “-“ key to decrease the number of iterations. Teacher’s Page Have the students fill in the data sheet for the number of branches. It is easier to count the branches and new braches as they cycle through the stages step by step. Have the students fill in the data for their tree (the length of AB will depend on each groups’ construction of the initial segment). The students can use calculate in the measure menu or they will need a calculator to total the lengths.
