Unit 1, Objective 3: Describe the relationship between the terms instructional design and technology, instructional design, and instructional media. History of the Field Media Instructional Media - the physical means (other than the instructor, textbook and chalkboard*) via which instruction is presented to learners. * it is important to note that although instructors, textbooks, and chalkboards all fit within this definition of instructional media,when professionals in our field (as well as people outside of the field) use the term “instructional media” they are usually referring to mediaother than instructors, textbooks, and blackboards. Unit 1, Objective 4: Describe the reasons (past and present) instructional media have not been used more extensively and discuss potential solutions to these problems. Keep in mind: media (other than instructor, text, chalkboard) are not always the right answer! Instructional design comes first!!! problems and solutions may apply to many settings, not just schools many types of instructional innovations (media, using the systems approach, cooperative learning, a lesson designed by someone else, etc.) are resisted by teachers, professors, instructors, administrators, etc.; solutions may apply to many such instances, not just media resistance Important Events in the History of Instructional Media ~ 1905: Birth of school museums and visual instruction movement - see overhead ~ 1910: Birth of instructional films Predictions and Expectations Regarding Media What they said about ...
