Visiting in Lebanon, the Lost Art in China Lebanon’s advantageous geographical location on the edge of the Mediterranean and at the crossroads between Europe and the Middle East has shaped its historical, cultural and political identity. Lebanon History and Culture Lebanon gained independence and became a republic in 1943. For several decades Lebanon’s diverse religious groups existed in relative harmony and the country developed a thriving economy, while Beirut become one of the most fashionable cities in the Mediterranean welcoming thousands of visitors every year. However, Lebanon has been in civil war because of the Palestine Liberation Organization members since 1975. And for decades the area has been in chaos of fighting and killing despite repeated peacekeeping efforts by the international community. Peace finally returned to Lebanon in 1990. But fighting continued in southern Lebanon between Israel and Shia militia until the period of Israeli occupation ended in 2000. And Lebanon has been involved political crisis after that. In 2009 Rafiq Hariri’s son--Saad Hariri was elected prime minister of the country and formed a national unity government which was replaced soon by a new government led by Najib Mikati in June, 2011 because of the case of Hariri’s death which Hezbollah involved in. Lebanese people are known for their hospitality. A handshake is the normal form of greeting. It is acceptable to give a small gift, particularly to invite home for a meal. As far as dress is concerned, casual dress is suitable for daytime wear, except in main towns where dress tends to be rather formal. Restaurants often require guests to dress for dinner. Visitors should dress according to the custom of the majority in the individual places being visited. Smoking is common and acceptable unless specific situation.
