(have kids raise hands) E=ear plugs or ear muffs, A=avoid loud sounds, R=reduce volume, S=shorten time in noise * Read slide. *Activity: Pick students to stand at arms length and have a conversation with noise, and without noise to show when a situation might be too loud. Use a tuning fork/hand clap/whistle to get their attention at the end of the activity. * How many of you remember getting your hearing screened at school? (Wait for them to raise hands) Most of you got your hearing screened in 3rd grade. If you think you are having a problem with your hearing talk to your parents or doctor. It is important to get your hearing checked regularly, just like you go to the doctor for check-ups. IF you think you’ve been around lots of noise, get your hearing checked. * Allow students to change their vote. Raise your hand when you think sounds start to become harmful [read through choices, pausing for votes] If you voted for C, you are right! Those of you who picked D are right. Sounds are also harmful at D, but start to become harmful at 85 and above. * *Post-test* Hand out post test to the students to be completed at the end after this slide. Have kids write down one thing that they learned today. Then have a few share their fact with the group. (Read slide) Hand out ear plugs and Lions Club Handouts. Demonstrate how to insert ear plugs. First you squish one end of the ear plug so that is small and can fit in your ear. Then take your ear and gently pull it back and then out. Put the small end of the ear plug into your ear and then let go of your ear. The vibrations of the ear drum make the malleus, incus, and stapes to vibrate. This helps the sound travel from the middle ear to the inner ear. The
