初中进阶 (2336 45版 Scientists who graduated from the University of Cambridge Founded in 1209, Cambridge has a reputation as one of the world’s most famous universities. Many of the most important scientific discoveries were made here and many of the most influential people graduated from here, too. Let’s meet two of them. Charles Darwin Charles Darwin (查尔斯·达尔文) is most well-known for his theory of evolution (进化论). He was tall and thin, being about six feet in height, but looked short because of a stoop (驼背). He was the son of a medical doctor, who expected his son to follow in his footsteps. Darwin was sent to a medical school to study at first. However, he hated medicine. Disappointed with his poor performance in medical studies, his father sent him to Cambridge with the expectation that he would become a priest (牧师). Again, Darwin didn’t show any interest. Instead, he collected lots of natural things like stones and beetles (甲壳虫), and devoted his time to reading books of natural history at Cambridge. In 1859, Darwin’s book On the Origin of Species (《物种起源》) detailed much of his research. And it provided evidence that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors (祖先). He changed the way people think about life on earth. Isaac Newton Isaac Newton (艾萨克·牛顿) is considered one of the most important scientists in history. He was slim (苗条的) with curly (卷曲的) hair. He had brown eyes and a good-looking face. When Newton was a young boy, his mother tried to persuade him to become a farmer to help on the farm. However, he was so bad at farming that she sent him back to college to study. In 1661, Newton began to attend college at Cambridge. It was during his years at Cambridge that Newton developed an interest in physics, mathematics, optics (光学) and astronomy (天文学). During his lifetime, Newton developed the law of universal gravitation (万有引力定律), the laws of motion (牛顿运动定律) etc., which became the basis for physics. 教案 Pre-reading He was a great th
