It is a national historic city, one of the first open coastal cities, a famous hometown of overseas Chinese and compatriots from Taiwan, a traditional important city of commerce and trade of Southeast China coast and a new industrial city of the west coast of Taiwan Strait. In May, 2009, the State Council promulgated Suggestions on Supporting Fujian Province to Speed up the Construction of Strait West-coast Economic Region and Fuzhou city, as the central capital city of this economic region, has been increasing its core economic radiating capacity and displaying obvious comparative advantages. Firstly, Fuzhou enjoys locational advantages. With Taiwan to its east, it is the only capital city in China’s mainland where people could actually see Taiwan across the Taiwan Straits. It is connected to two of the most important economic areas in China—the Yangtze River delta to its south and the Pearl River delta to its north. In addition, it has China’s vast interland for economic growth to its west. All of these put Fuzhou in a locationally advantageous position. Secondly, Fuzhou enjoys proximity to the seas. As a coastal city in Southeast China, it has a 1,137 km-long coastline, about one-third of the total coastline in Fujian Province. It is home to several of the country’s rare deep-water harbors such as Luoyuan Bay and Fuqing Bay. At present, Fuzhou Port has been listed as one of the 20 pivotal ports along the coast of China. It is also one of the pilot ports with direct transportation to Taiwan and has opened direct shipping routes to Hong Kong and international liner shipping routes to Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, the U.S., Spain, Europe, and other countries and regions.
