The first game played in this former home of the Brooklyn Dodgers took place in 1938. The Dodgers no longer play for Brooklyn. II. Pre-reading Activities Listen to the short passage twice and answer questions Q1. Why do you think people stared at the father and the son? Reference key: The father was crippled. / There was sth. wrong with the father’s leg(s). Q2. What do you think a “good heart” is? Reference key: If a person has a “good heart”, he will not let on his/her bad feelings easily, and s/he must be active and enjoy life. Q3. Has the speaker’s feeling about his father changed as he grows up? What is the difference? Reference key: Yes. As youth he felt shamed and didn’t want other people to stare at them. Whereas, many years later, he admired his father’s good heart/spirit and often remembered father’s examples. Script In this story, a son describes how shamed he felt as a youth when he walked down the street with his crippled father. The son did not like how people stared at them. His father never let on that he saw any of this. He was very active and enjoyed life. He often took part in activities through his son. Over time, the son learned that his father had a good heart. His father has been gone many years and the son is sorry he did not tell him how much he admired him. Now, he often remembers his father’s example. III.
