ABSTRACTThis is a sociolinguistic study of phonological variations about retroflex and non-retroflex. in Shisanye Community of Taiyuan City ,Shanxi Province. Analyzing the phonological characters about retroflex and non-retroflex in Shisanye Community, this study reveals linguistic and social factors related to the variations, thus it explores the process and trend of the usage about retroflex and non-retroflex of people in Shisanye Community.The first chapter gives an introduction of the reason and meaning of the study, then introduces some methodologies about this study, and introduces the structure and contents of the thesis.The second chapter describes the research knowledge status at home and abroad, mainly studies on language variation, linguistic communities, language in industrial areas and researches about the retroflex and non-retroflex.The third chapter gives a brief introduction of Shisanye Community first, then introduces the details of the process on the linguistic investigation, including how to ensure the realm of people investigated, how to collect data, and how to rewrite the linguistic codes.The fourth chapter analyses the data, setting forth the status about retroflex and non-retroflex usage overall, and the analyses the characters of retroflex and non-retroflex usage in different ages and genders, then explains the reasons about how do these characters come into being. The reasons are two items: linguistic contact and linguistic attitude.The last chapter is the end. After the language investigation on people in Shisanye Community, we could see the characters of the usage on retroflex and non-retroflex are based on different ages and genders, and in a course of “Changes in Process”, which is the result of inner and outer factors function jointly.
