Taking the social optimum case as a benchmark, we explore the output of the economical cars and that of the expensive cars，and the welfare impact under perfect competition, monopoly and Cournot Competition respectively. Also, we provide relevant policy suggestions with respect to different market structures. Finally, we extend the model and investigate China’s Automobile market structure, where there exist several joint ventures subsidized by the local governments and they are engaging in Cournot Competition. We find that the local policy subsidies contribute to better social welfare.
