7.9 Pre-reading
Have the students predict what the novel may be about from the title.
Ask is the students have read any other novels or short stories by Morris Gleitzman and discuss what they were about.
Allow students to examine the front and back covers.

Introduce the terms ‘orientation’, complication’, climax’, and ‘resolution’.
Have the students identify parts in simple known stories e.g. The Three Little Pigs, Cinderella
Cloze passage for plot structures of narratives.
Novels are made up of a number of parts like a body. The plot is the backbone of a narrative. It is the outline or plan the whole narrative rests on. Narratives have:
An orientation, which sets the scene,
Complications, or things that happened to make the story interesting,
A climax, which is the high point, or final complication, and
A resolution, when everything is explained or worked out and the story reaches a satisfying ending.

6.10 Reading the novel
The novel is read in class over approximately 2 weeks using a number of strategies to enhance interest and comprehension including:
Reading to Learn strategies
Reviewing previous reading sessions
Predicting
Discussing unusual or interesting use of language
Speculating on character motivation
Discussing individual experiences similar to those of the characters.
