There are hundreds and hundreds of people in the park. Some are walking by the lake. Others are sitting on the benches and chatting. Over there, under a huge pine tree, a group of boys and girls are playing games. Nearby, an interesting game of chess is going on between two old men. Some people are watching. Near a flower garden, two white-haired grannies are knitting in the sunshine. Their grandchildren are playing on the grass. Not far off, some students are singing and dancing. It is Sunday in the park. Everybody is having a good time after a week of work and study. . Notes There are hundreds and hundreds of people in the park. hundreds of people 直译是“数以百计的人”,即“许多游人”。句中hundred 是名词,其后加of 则用复数,表示“数以百计”，即“许多”的意思。hundreds 在这里重复一下表示的人数更多一些。 同样用法的词还用thousand, million。 例如: He knows thousands of stories. 他会讲许多故事。 I can give you millions of examples. 我可以给你们举出许许多多的例子。 注意: 1)这里用的是一种夸张的修辞手段,不必按字面意义理解。 2)hundred, thousand, million作定语用时, 后面如果没有 of 而是紧接名词，无论前面是什么基数词,一律用单数。例如: There are about three thousand students in our school. 我校约有3000名学生。 China has a population of a thousand million. 中国有十亿人口。 Some are walking by the lake. Others are sitting on the benches and chatting. 在谈到两个人或东西，说一个怎样，另一个又怎样时，要用 one, the other (参阅第十五课第三段)。 谈到许多人或东西，说一些怎样，另一些又怎样时，则常用 some, others, 例如： Some of us are going today and (the) others are going on Monday. Others 在表示“(所有)其他的人(或东西)”时，前面要加定冠词 the Over there, under a huge pine tree, a group of boys and girls are playing games. over there 与under a huge pine tree 都作状语。under a huge pine tree进一步具体说明over there。 over there 中的over 是副词,意同at/on the other side,意思是“在那边”,表示与说话者之间有一定距离,例如: Lets go over there. 上那边去吧。 Come over here. 到这边来。 介词under表示
