This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). /licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract Soil contamination by heavy metals and the associated health problems resulting from foods pol- luted by heavy metals have been paid more and more attention in China. In this review paper, we summarized the activity and distribution of heavy metals, limiting factors for the availability of heavy metals in soil, influence of heavy metals on crop growth and development, crop resistance to heavy metals, and remediation of heavy metal pollution in agriculture. At the same time, some valuable strategies have been suggested to remediate heavy metal pollution in agriculture. This paper provided some theoretical basis for further studies on the heavy metal pollution in China.
