Abstract
The previous studies on fuzziness show that fuzziness is one of the essential characteristics of human thinking. Thus, fuzziness exists in human language and the close connection between fuzzy theory and translation can be seen. Therefore, it is very natural to introduce fuzzy theory into translation study. The object of this thesis is focused on the numerals with semantic fuzziness. The present writer attempts to study the translation of numerals with semantic fuzziness in the light of fuzzy theory. By analyzing and comparing the translation in three English versions of The Story of the Stone (translated by David Hawkes, Bencraft Joly and Yang Hsien-yi Gladys Yang respectively), the present writer will explore the causes of semantic fuzziness of numerals, the classification of fuzzy numerals, their pragmatic functions and the specific translation strategies.
