I I Abstract The source text was chosen from The Goldfinch, a long story written by famous American female writer, Donna Tartt. It took her eleven years and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2004. Chapter Four was selected as the text. The novel has high literary value with its beautiful language, detailed description and fascinating plot. The report can be divided into four parts: the first part is the description of the task, including the source of the text, text analysis and the significance of the project; the second part discusses the process of translation which mainly explains the features of the novel and “Functional Equivalence Theory”; the third part is the case analysis, which displays some difficult points in translation and practical translation methods like addition, conversion, division and so on; the fourth part is a conclusion, including the experience and lessons from the translation. The translation task is guided by Nada?s “Functional Equivalence Theory”. The thesis puts more emphasis on the features of the novel, difficult points in translation and presents some specific translation methods under the guidance of the theory.
