It can be used to detect /wiki/Aircraftaircraft, ships, /wiki/Spacecraftspacecraft, /wiki/Guided_missilesguided missiles, /wiki/Motor_vehiclemotor vehicles, /wiki/Weather_radarweather formations, and terrain. The radar dish antenna transmits pulses of radio waves or /wiki/Microwavemicrowaves which bounce off any object in their path. The object returns a tiny part of the waves energy to a dish or antenna which is usually located at the same site as the transmitter.　　Radar was secretly developed by several nations before and during /wiki/World_War_IIWorld War II. The term RADAR was coined in 1940 by the /wiki/United_States_NavyUnited States Navy as an /wiki/Acronym_and_initialismacronym for Radio Detection and Ranging.
