We need to clearly define that Sybase IQ is a RELATIONAL DATABASE aimed at data warehousing and business analytic environments. It is a “STANDALONE” product and is not dependent on other Sybase databases (i.e., it is not an option of either ASE and ASA). Also, it can be deployed on both Sybase or non-Sybase shops. * * * * * * Let’s look at the architectural advantage that Sybase IQ has over a standard, row-based OLTP database. Sybase IQ is not a transactional database; its strength is in bulk loading of data. Here we see a simple query being carried out in such a database. All the data the query is looking for is located in the three columns labeled 5, 6, and 7. Unfortunately, to find that data in a row-based database, you have to pay for it one of two ways. Either you have to spend time building indexes and doing other optimizations to specific to that query, or you have to wait as we are doing for the query to grind through every single item in every row of the database in order to come up with just the data we want. Now let’s look at how Sybase IQ handles the same query. Observe how much faster the query is able to work its way through the column-based structure than it was the row-based structure. Of course, you can build an index and do other optimizations to make this particular query run faster in a row-based database, but that won’t help you with the next query you need to run. You’ll have to do all that work over again. But with Sybase IQ, you’re ready to perform any query as fast as you did this one.
